Its been one month since political commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated in front of hundreds of people in person and quickly millions of people all over the world saw the confronting horror of watching a man's murder streamed across the internet in its entirety. If you were unlucky enough to witness this horrific and truly evil scene you probably haven't been able to erase it from your memory. In a twist of irony where governments are doubling down on censorship and suppressing certain narratives in the name of "protection" social media platforms were quick to stream the horror of that day for algorithmic fodder. And if you didn't see it? You were probably still affected by it on some energetic level.
While there are plenty of horror's occurring all around the world at any given time, we are continually reminded that life is fragile and are continually exposed to more negative scenes rather than uplifting positive ones on a daily basis. By lunchtime on your daily scroll you can be subjected to over fifty different violent, negative and traumatic events unintentionally.
Regardless of whether or not you are disciplined with where you focus your energy and screen time, the collective consciousness still has an enduring effect on us all. And increasingly, no matter how "disciplined" you are, your more often than not, forced to bare witness to the endless doom-scrolling that has become our entertainment. This is the inherent nature of life - we are all intertwined and inter-connected, whether we want to be or not. What is happening on the other side of the world, has an effect on us on a deeply spiritual, psychological and energetic individual level.
In my therapy practice, I'm seeing more and more people affected by world events, creating constant worry and anxiety that they feel there is no hope for a future or worse they feel guilty when their lives are going well and others are suffering. While the algorithm tries everyday to highjack your emotional state and influence your beliefs and values, its important to realise that it is deliberately designed this way and its up to you to protect your energy and spirit. Its not just a matter of logging off and limiting screen time, or only following positive accounts - while this helps, it needs to go deeper than this. This is where the benefit of regulating your nervous system comes in as well as energy protection or spiritual hygiene I like to call it. For years I have said that we are in a deeply spiritual war - spiritual warfare has been used on the collective consciousness for a long time, but with the emergence of technology it has become easier to loose your way and become engulfed in the flames of anxiety, depression and loss of hope.
While we move through and navigate the collective darkness, its important to realise there is always hope - the effect that one man has had on the world has been extraordinary to witness to say the least. If you ever doubt your power - don't. Doubt kills hope and breeds helplessness, the precursor to depression. We need more people to stand in their power, believing in something greater and more powerful than anything any man or government can conjure up. If your grieving, allow yourself to grieve and give yourself the space and grace to just be. Anchoring into the present moment, savour every interaction, meal and sun on your cheek, because one day it will end and you won't have any more time to grieve what was.
